Application FAQs

Yes. Master Flame can be applied by spraying on, rolling on, or submerging smaller items in a container. No special equipment or certified installer is required.

Master Flame requires a minimum of 24 to 48 hours to fully dry and cure. In ideal conditions with good airflow and low humidity, 24 hours is generally sufficient. In spaces with high humidity or limited ventilation, 48 hours is the safer standard.

Yes. Master Flame is a non-toxic, water-based formula and is safe for indoor use. Ensure the area is reasonably ventilated during application and allow adequate dry time before occupying the space.

Yes. For exterior use, treat the material with Master Flame, allow 24 to 48 hours to dry, then seal with a water-based exterior finish. The sealant locks the treatment in and protects it from rain, snow, and moisture over time.

Yes. The surface should be clean and free of dust, debris, and any contaminants before applying. Any buildup on the surface can interfere with absorption and limit the effectiveness of the treatment.

For thicker materials, yes. Master Flame needs to absorb all the way through to provide full protection, and treating all sides ensures thorough saturation. For thinner materials or situations where one side is inaccessible, focus on achieving full saturation from the accessible side. The key is ensuring the material is fully saturated regardless of how many sides you can reach.

In most cases, no. Master Flame is a clear, water-based formula that absorbs into the material without altering its appearance or feel. In instances of heavy application, a light white residue may appear on the surface, but this can be wiped away with a dry towel and does not affect the protection.

Over-application will not harm the material or reduce its protection. If too much Master Flame is applied, the excess that the material cannot absorb will dry on the surface as a light white residue. Simply wipe it away with a dry towel. Do not use a wet cloth, as moisture can pull the formula back out of the treated material.

Yes. While a spray device is the most common and efficient method, Master Flame can also be applied with a paint roller for larger flat surfaces. Regardless of the method, ensure even, thorough coverage across all sides of the material.

Yes. Before applying your finish, allow Master Flame to fully dry for 24 to 48 hours. Finishes must be water-based to ensure compatibility. Test in an inconspicuous area first to verify there are no negative reactions with the material. Oil-based paints and sealers are not compatible and will negatively impact Master Flame's effectiveness.

Yes. Master Flame can be applied to drywall. To achieve full effectiveness, it is important to apply Master Flame first and allow 24 to 48 hours to dry before painting.

Compatibility FAQs

Yes. Master Flame is compatible with most absorbent, natural-fiber fabrics including cotton, wool, linen, canvas, burlap, and more. Before applying, perform a small compatibility test in an inconspicuous area to ensure no negative reaction with the material.

No. Master Flame is only compatible with porous, absorbent materials. Metals, plastics, polyesters, and other non-absorbent surfaces cannot absorb the formula and will not receive protection.

Yes, as long as the carpet or rug is made from natural fibers such as wool, cotton, or jute. Synthetic carpets made from nylon, polyester, or polypropylene will not absorb the formula and will not receive protection.

Yes. Hay, dried floral arrangements, dried corn stalks, and similar natural materials are highly absorbent and respond well to Master Flame treatment. These materials are also among the most flammable commonly used in seasonal and event decoration, making treatment particularly worthwhile.

No. Master Flame must be applied to bare, unfinished wood. Paint, stain, sealer, or any other finish will prevent the formula from penetrating the surface. If the wood has an existing finish, sand it down to bare wood before applying.

The best way to confirm compatibility is by performing a small-scale test before full application. Apply Master Flame to a small sample of the material, allow it to dry for 24 to 48 hours, and inspect the surface. Please download and read the Master Flame Specification Sheet for full details on the recommended compatibility test procedure.

Certification & Testing FAQs

NFPA 701 is the national standard for testing the flame propagation of textiles and films. It measures afterflame, flaming drip and debris, and material weight loss when a treated fabric is exposed to a controlled flame. Master Flame passed all criteria with a mean afterflame of zero seconds, zero flaming drip or debris, and a mean weight loss of just 24.9% against a 40% failure threshold.

Yes. Master Flame's NFPA 701 certification makes it suitable for use in theatrical productions, live events, venues, and other commercial environments where fire marshal approval and compliance documentation are required. Its ASTM E84 Class A rating also makes it appropriate for commercial construction applications.

In most cases, no certification is required. However, it is recommended to check code requirements with your local fire marshal before applying, particularly for commercial, theatrical, or public-facing applications.

Reapplication & Longevity FAQs

Longevity depends on the material and its environment. For indoor wood not exposed to moisture, reapplication is recommended every 2 years. For outdoor wood sealed with a water-based paint or stain, reapplication is not necessary unless the finish is stripped. For fabrics that experience regular friction, reapplication every 6 months is recommended. For fabrics that are washed, Master Flame must be reapplied after every laundering.

Yes. Master Flame is water-soluble, which means sustained exposure to rain, snow, or moisture will gradually degrade the treatment over time. For any outdoor application, it is essential to apply a water-based sealant over the treated surface to lock the formula in and protect it from the elements.

Yes. Master Flame is water-soluble and will not survive laundering. Any treated fabric that has been washed must be retreated before it can be relied upon for protection. For dry-cleaned items, reapplication is recommended after every other cleaning cycle.

Follow the recommended reapplication timelines based on your material and environment. If a treated fabric has been washed, retreat it. If outdoor wood has been exposed to significant moisture without a sealant, retreat it. If it has been more than two years since treating interior wood, retreat it. If a painted or sealed surface has been stripped for refinishing, retreat the bare surface before applying the new finish.

Safety FAQs

No. Master Flame is a non-toxic, water-based formula. It is safe to handle during application and safe for use in residential, commercial, and production environments.

Yes. Once fully dried and cured, Master Flame is safe for environments where children and pets are present. As with any product during application, ensure reasonable ventilation and allow the material to fully dry before contact.

Yes. Master Flame is formulated to be environmentally friendly. It is water-based, non-toxic, and does not contain the harmful chemical compounds associated with many traditional flame retardant products.

Master Flame is specifically formulated to inhibit the development of toxic smoke in addition to resisting flame spread. This is reflected in its low Smoke Developed Index of 55 in ASTM E84 testing, far below the Class A maximum of 450.

Coverage FAQs

Coverage varies based on the thickness and porosity of the material being treated. Approximate coverage by product size is as follows: a quart sprayer covers up to 100 square feet, a gallon covers up to 500 square feet, a 4-gallon case covers up to 2,000 square feet, a 5-gallon pail covers up to 2,500 square feet, and a 55-gallon drum covers up to 27,500 square feet. For best results, account for treating all sides of the material when calculating how much you need.

For large-scale construction applications, the 5-gallon pail or 55-gallon drum are the most practical options. The 5-gallon pail covers up to 2,500 square feet and the 55-gallon drum covers up to 27,500 square feet, making both well-suited for treating significant quantities of lumber or other building materials.
